The highlight of your field trip to the Atomic Testing Museum will be the experience inside the Ground Zero Theater. Picture your class sitting seven miles from ground zero, early in the morning awaiting the detonation of an atomic bomb! The special effects designed to simulate that experience might startle some for a nanosecond, but the message will be long remembered. The tremendous power of nuclear energy boggles the mind.
Your exploration of the various museum galleries and the Ground Zero Theater begins when your bus arrives at the Atomic Testing Museum, and a staff member boards the bus to give instructions about lining up in the lobby. Once inside, your class will be given a short introduction about the Nevada Test Site Historical Foundation, the discovery of the Atomic Bomb during World War II and nuclear testing in general while you check in at the admissions booth with a head count.
Your group will be guided from place to place within the museum, You will be provided with curriculum to enable you, the teacher, to facilitate the tour for your class. As your class is escorted from place to place by museum staff members in lab coats, please feel free to ask questions.
The Atomic Testing Museum tries to accommodate special requests, when notified in advance. When you are booking your tour, please let us know your specific needs.
Have an intellectually stimulating experience learning about the history of nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site and around the world. Please remember that Hiroshima and Nagasaki were not tests. Although the delivery of those bombs is discussed, it is not the focus of the museum. One-of-a-kind artifacts relating to nuclear testing are exhibited in our galleries along with interactive videos and rare footage. Recently declassified photographs offer an interesting perspective. Not every test had a positive outcome. Students will learn about “Dirty Harry” and other venting mishaps.
